Privacy Policy

Last Updated: April 10, 2026

At Markkeep ("we," "us," or "our"), your privacy is our priority. As a local-first productivity application, we are built on the fundamental principle that your data belongs to you. This Privacy Policy outlines our practices regarding the collection, use, and disclosure of information when you use our website and desktop application.

1. Information We Collect

a. Desktop Application Data

We do not collect, transmit, or store your personal notes, tasks, bookmarks, or any other content created within the Markkeep desktop application. All such data is stored locally on your device's hard drive based on a local SQLite database. We have no access to it, and there are no hidden mechanisms to upload your data.

b. License Validation Data (Standard & Advanced)

To provide commercial versions and prevent piracy, when you purchase and activate Markkeep Standard or Advanced, we need to verify your license validity. We collect the following limited information:

  • Device Hardware ID: To bind the license to a specific device and prevent abuse.
  • Email Address: To receive purchase receipts, license keys, and customer support.
  • Activation Code: Your unique proof of purchase.

This data is stored securely on our licensing servers. Data Retention Period: Unless you actively exercise your right to deletion, your license validation data will be retained for the lifetime of the software service to ensure your premium rights remain intact. Note: If you only use the Basic free version, we do not collect any of this data.

c. Website and Analytics

When you visit our website, we may collect basic, anonymized telemetry data (such as page views, referring sites, and browser types) to improve our web presence. This data cannot be used to identify you personally.

2. Crash Reports & Telemetry

Currently, Markkeep does not collect any usage telemetry data (e.g., feature click rates) or automatic crash reports. If we introduce such mechanisms in future versions to help improve software quality, we will implement a strict "Opt-in" mechanism. We will never send any telemetry or crash logs without your explicit consent.

3. Third-Party Services and Open Source

We use third-party companies and open-source components:

  • Payment Processors: We use third-party services for payment processing (e.g., Paddle / PayPal). Their use of your personal information is governed by their respective Privacy Policies.
  • Open Source Components: Our software relies on third-party open-source components (e.g., React, Tauri). These run locally and do not bypass this privacy policy to collect your data.

4. Your Privacy Rights & Data Deletion

We respect your "Right to be Forgotten." If you no longer wish to use our premium features or want to completely clear your records from our licensing servers, you can exercise your right to deletion at any time:

  • How to delete: Contact us via the official support email and provide your email and activation code.
  • Consequences: Your Device Hardware ID, Email, and Activation Code will be permanently deleted. This will invalidate your activation status, and the software will downgrade to the Basic free version. This action is irreversible, but it will not affect or delete any notes or task data saved locally on your device.

5. Children's Privacy

Our software and commercial services are primarily intended for adults. If you are a minor, please purchase and use the premium versions under the guidance and consent of a legal guardian. If we discover that we have collected personal information from children (such as an activation email) without prior guardian consent, we will take steps to delete the relevant records as soon as possible.

6. Language Prevails

This Privacy Policy may be provided in multiple languages. In the event of any discrepancies or conflicts between different language versions, the Simplified Chinese version shall prevail.

7. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any major changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page or via software update prompts. Continuing to use the software indicates your agreement to the modified policy.
